About the Workshop

This workshop on sculpting the human figure in clay emphasizes an experimental, improvisational approach to discovering movement, gesture and vitality. Through live demonstrations, hands-on exercises and slide presentations, participants will learn to manipulate the clay figure and push past common stumbling blocks of proportion, movement and balance.

Students will build small-scale maquettes in anticipation of larger work, learn solid sculpting methods, and discover how to hollow and prepare pieces for firing. We'll break the figure down into basic components to explore their potential for various poses, with special sessions focusing on challenging areas such as heads and hands.

Surface techniques will be explored using texture, underglazes, stains, pencils and mark-making to strengthen the form and develop rich visual effects. Michelle will work individually with each participant on their artwork. All skill levels welcome!

Participants will be housed in the remarkably well-preserved Umbrian hill town of Monte Castello di Vibio.ย  Your workshop package is all-inclusive, providing welcome and departure services and airport transfer from the Rome Fiumicino, Leonardo Da Vinci Airport (FCO). Aboard our comfortable private bus, single occupancy accommodations with shared bath (a wide range of upgrades with private bath are available), 3 meals per day Monday-Thursday, Prosecco brunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday (no meals are served on Friday, our excursion day. Your workshop includes one excursion per week and many additional options are available on weekends for an additional fee. Of course, 24/7 access to facilities and 24/7 bi-lingual support are provided.

Itinerary

Day1 : Sunday, 4 October

Arrive Rome/Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO); Bus Departs FCO promptly at 12:00 PM. With this in mind, our shuttle cannot support arrivals later than 11:00 AM.  Participants arriving after 11:00 AM must coordinate the trip to Monte Castello at their own expense.

Arrival at Monte Castello di Vibio appx.: 2:30 PM:Lunch/Orientation/Rest/ Tour of village/ Dinner

Day 2 : Monday, 5 October

8:30 – 9:30 Breakfast

9:30 – 1:00 Morning and Afternoon Sessions:

Day one we’ll explore solid construction methods by modeling small-scale heads in clay.

In the afternoon we will shift to plaster casting to create simple one piece press molds. This

technique will allow for working within a series producing multiples that become the starting

points for investigating variation within repetition. With several identical casts, participants can

explore how different surface treatments—carving, building up, texturing, or applying various

finishes—dramatically alter the reading of the same underlying form. We’ll ground these

investigations within the rich art historical tradition of the sculpted bust taking particular

inspiration from the earthenware traditions of Umbria.

The Bust:

  • Slides- A historical overview of the bust in clay
  • Constructing the primary form
  • Placing the secondary forms including the eyes, nose, mouth, ears and hair
  • Texture both Incidental and accidental
  • Plaster casting to create press molds for surface testing and works in series

1:00 – 2:00 Lunch

2:00 – 6:30 Afternoon Session

9:30 – 1:00 Morning and Afternoon Sessions:

Day two we’ll work in multiples to construct 2-3 busts using Monday’s press molds,

transforming each to create a series of unique works. In the afternoon session we will sculpt

hands using a simple construction method, exploring the vocabulary of gesture and emotion.

We’ll draw inspiration from the Etruscan sculptors who used hands as eloquent instruments of

communication and emotion in terracotta, using gestures of offering, blessing, or conversation to

animate their works with psychological presence.

Itterations/ Series:

  • Creating multiples from press molds
  • Developing variation: texture, expression, fragmentation
  • Creating visual relationships across multiple pieces
  • Exploring unity and difference within a series
  • Surface treatments and exploration

Day 4 : Wednesday, 7 October

8:30 – 9:30 Breakfast

9:30 – 1:00 Morning and Afternoon Sessions:

Day three: The Figure. We’ll create gestural maquette studies. We’ll construct the figure using

the block method, an accessible, systematic approach suitable for all skill levels. This exercise

will help participants learn to construct the human figure from simple components and explore

poses incorporating gesture and movement. We will explore ideas such as contrapposto,

groupings, and narrative. We’ll work quickly and hollow thick sections to prepare works for

firing. We will draw inspiration from Etruscan reclining figures, those enigmatic banqueters and

tomb sculptures that capture both architectural solidity and ease, formality and intimacy.

  • Seated Figure
  • Reclining Figure
  • Revising, loosening up, avoiding pitfalls.
  • Proportions. Mark making. contrapposto, groupings, and creating narrative.

Day 5 : Thursday, 8 October

8:30 – 9:30 Breakfast

9:30 – 1:00 Morning and Afternoon Sessions:
