Residency Program

The ICA Residency program was created to provide artists and writers an opportunity to work in a tranquil, uninterrupted setting that is conducive to focusing on their work. An artist residency in Italy through ICA also allows for easy access to urban centers in Italy such as Rome, Florence, Assisi, and Perugia.
The village of Monte Castello provides a unique kind of solitude, creating a relaxed and contemplative atmosphere. Clarity of thought is fostered in an environment where one is surrounded by hills and distant mountains and rewarded by panoramas at every overlook. At the same time, discussions with fellow residents or retreat attendees over morning coffee in the piazza or over dinner on the terrace watching the moonrise helps to facilitate critical exchange and fosters creative growth.
The all inclusive program is offered through the months of May and October each year and is application based with a rolling deadline.
Residency durations vary according to your needs/schedule and are based on a weekly rate of €1650, with a minimum stay of 1 week.

Application Process

All artists and writers interested in participating in the ICA artist residency program in Monte Castello must first apply online.
The review panel consists of rotating, professional contemporary artists and writers based in Italy and the United States. Upon review of the application, an ICA member will reach out to you regarding your application and if you are accepted into the program.

The ICA Artist Residency program dovetails with our retreats and includes a private office/studio, weekly field trips, living space and other standard accommodations. Residents pursue their own interests, working in their studio spaces in the village or in the landscape any time of day or night, and may audit one class concurrently offered by ICA, provided they commit to regular attendance.
We offer private and double accommodation in our fourteenth century stone convent, Asilo. Asilo (meaning sanctuary) has spectacular views of the Tiber Valley. We also have accommodations in our 18th century palazzo and apartments in our historic buildings. Your artist residency program includes full board with three hearty home-cooked Umbrian meals per day.

  • Three chef-catered meals per day in Monte Castello
  • Private or double occupancy room in a restored twelfth-century convent (private apartments available in place of workspace for writers)
  • Private Studio / Workspace
  • One class audit per three week session
  • Transportation to and from Rome Fiumicino airport
  • Participation in field trips according to events calendar
  • Custom excursions can be recommended based on interests and are available upon request for supplemental fee.

Private Studio / Workspace

All program participants are provided with private studio space in the medieval buildings around the village. For an additional fee writers and scholars have the option to be housed in private apartments around the village with adequate space for living and work. Typically, we are able to accommodate an individual’s needs in terms of the size and location of studio spaces. Through our application form, let us know your needs/preferences, taking into consideration factors such as natural or artificial light, wall or table space, space with a view or more atmospheric interior spaces, etc.

Final Exhibition / Readings

At the close of each session, Artists in Residence have the option of participating in a group exhibition, or applying for a solo exhibition of work produced during the course of their visit, and Writers in Residence are encouraged to provide readings of their work. Exhibitions typically held in the school gallery, which is centrally located in the village, near the theatre. Other locations can be arranged upon request. ICA will provide advertising for the events, which are well attended by the community, artists residing in the area and present residents. Sale of work is permitted and encouraged.
