Artist Residency Program in Italy

The ICA artist residency program was created to provide artists and writers an opportunity to work in a tranquil, uninterrupted setting that is conducive to focusing on their work. An artist residency in Italy through ICA also allows for easy access to urban centers in Italy such as Rome, Florence, Assisi, and Perugia.

Imagine a period of time in which you are able to totally absorb yourself in your work - away from the stresses of your daily lives and the pressures of the modern world. Consider an opportunity to focus on expression and creativity. There is perhaps no place better for this than our little mountain village overlooking the Tiber Valley in the region of Umbria – known to Italians as “the green heart of Italy.”

The village of Monte Castello provides a unique kind of solitude, creating a relaxed and contemplative atmosphere. Clarity of thought is fostered in an environment where one is surrounded by hills and distant mountains and rewarded by panoramas at every overlook. At the same time, discussions with fellow residents or retreat attendees over morning coffee in the piazza or over dinner on the terrace watching the moonrise helps to facilitate critical exchange and fosters creative growth.

The all inclusive program is offered through the months of May and October each year and is application based with a rolling deadline.
Residency durations vary according to your needs/schedule and are based on a weekly rate of €1650, with a minimum stay of 1 week.

Amenities

We are proud to offer the highest quality and most extensive range of amenities out of all like facilities in Italy. The ICA Artist Residency program is ALL INCLUSIVE and offers all of the amenities that are provided with our artist workshops.

Residents will pursue their own interests and be provided with the spaces within our village. We offer private and double accommodation for our artists. Including stay in our fourteenth century stone convent Asilo (meaning sanctuary), known for spectacular views of the Tiber Valley. We also offer accommodation upgrades. These upgrades include apartments & villas which could be a great option for those sharing their residency with a loved one.

Your stay includes one scheduled excursion per week. Excursions are wonderful experiences that we are happy to customize as additions for our residents. Our village provides peace and tranquility as well as an inspiring environment. Our location is unique in the opportunities it provides for immersion into Italian culture.

We make sure that our residents have the best experience possible by providing them with an orientation, bilingual staff and 24/7 support and access to facilities. All of the amenities that we provide are geared to support the work and working time of our residents. We seek to provide a trouble-free environment, where our artist residency participants can focus - expanding their capabilities and their minds. Private Studio / Workspace

All artist residency program participants are provided with private studio space in the medieval buildings around the village. For an additional fee writers and scholars have the option to be housed in private apartments around the village with adequate space for living and work. Typically, we are able to accommodate an individual’s needs in terms of the size and location of studio spaces. Through our application form, let us know your needs/preferences, taking into consideration factors such as natural or artificial light, wall or table space, space with a view or more atmospheric interior spaces, etc.

Final Exhibition / Readings

At the close of each session, Artists in Residency have the option of participating in a group exhibition, or applying for a solo exhibition of work produced during the course of their visit, and Writers in Residence are encouraged to provide readings of their work. Exhibitions are typically held in the school gallery, which is centrally located in the village, near the theatre. Other locations can be arranged upon request. ICA will provide advertising for the events, which are well attended by the community, artists residing in the area and present residents. Sale of work is permitted and encouraged.
