About the Workshop

Amy Weiskopf and Xico Greenwald will co-teach a two-week summer still life painting workshop open to artists of all levels, from beginner to advanced. Instruction will be tailored to individual students within the group. Participants will be able to work from classroom still life arrangements put together by the instructors and also have the option of assembling their own still life arrangements in a private studio space. Still life objects can be obtained during trips to local Umbrian produce stands. This session will include evening art lectures, group discussions, and day-trips to visit Museo Morandi and nearby early renaissance masterworks by Piero della Francesca. Students can also take advantage of unstructured time to explore the Umbrian countryside.

  • Lunch is served at 1:00 PM on the ringing of the church bell that has called farmers of the village to their mid-day repast for hundreds of years.  Lunch is a traditional, generous 4-course Umbrian lunch accompanied by house wine (wines from our cellar-list are available for an additional fee).  Traditionally, this type of fortifying lunch came late in the day to farmers who began their labors well before sunrise in hopes of fending off the heat of the afternoon. Afterward, with the aid of the wine and a hearty meal, time was spent resting before returning to work between 3:30 and 5:00, which still continues until dinner at 8:00 PM. Our. Mid-day meal is still served at 1:00 PM and consists of a pasta course, followed by the main course with vegetables.  Afterward, a fresh green salad or fruit salad or fresh, is followed by pastry or seasonal fruit.
  • Dinner is served at 8:00 PM. As it has been for  residents of our village since the middle-ages, lunch at ICARTS is announced with the chiming of the village church bells at 8:00 PM reminding farmers to come home from the field. A typical Umbrian dinner is lighter than lunch.  However, since our guests are likely used to larger meal at dinner, we again offer four courses: pasta or soup, a main course (meat or fish) with vegetable and legumes, a green salad and fruit salad, and an offering of pastry or fresh fruit.

About the Instructor

Xico Greenwald

Xico Greenwald is a New York City-based artist. His artwork has been shown at numerous New York galleries, including Nancy Margolis Gallery, The Painting Center, Janet Kurnatowski Gallery, Brian Morris Gallery, Thompson Giroux, and Life on Mars. He has curated exhibitions at Queens College Art Center, Long Island University’s Selena Gallery, and Westbeth Gallery. He has taught at Pratt Institute, Rider University, and Mount Gretna School of Art, and is currently Associate Professor at BMCC-CUNY. His essays, reviews and interviews have been published in The New York Sun, Delicious Line, artcritical.com, Painting Perceptions, and Painters’ Table

In 2019-2020, the Collins C. Dibboll Art Gallery at Loyola University New Orleans presented “Xico Greenwald: Paintings, On the Table,” a curated exhibit featuring fourteen canvases from the previous ten years. In the accompanying exhibition catalog, Curator Saskia Ozols Eubanks wrote, “Greenwald’s work transcends problems associated with certain types of contemporary representation. His paintings are not in competition with the aesthetic of photography, the paintings go beyond the decorative, and are not kitschy or overly nostalgic. The work is fresh, new, and contemporary.”

Writing about Greenwald’s 2019 solo show at The Painting Center for Delicious Line, reviewer noted, “The more time one spends looking at these paintings, realistic but not hyperrealistic, careful but not precious, the greater the rewards.”
